My Experiences


My flight from Munich to Malaysia was delayed on 15 January 2019. I was worried that I would be unable to board my flight on time because of a security staff strike at the airport. If I can’t board on time, I thought I would be unable to get compensation because it was caused by the security staff instead of the airline.

Instead, I was able to pass the security checkpoint but the flight was delayed anyway. After 2 hours, they announced the flight was cancelled due to technical issues.

I was happy to hear technical issues got the flight cancelled. I just follow the crowd to the airline’s counter. Staff dispatched an energy bar and water while we waited in line to collect the form of compensation, taxi & hotel vouchers.

They told me Oman Air would inform me of the next flight by email. So I had to keep checking my email.

This happened to me before. The first time I missed my flight from Doha to Milan, with Qatar Airway. That was before I knew I could claim flight compensation.

This time in Germany, I went to collect my luggage and I walked to the taxi stand and gave the taxi voucher to the driver. It was late at night so there wasn’t much to do or see in Munich. I stayed at Mercure Hotel München Airport Freising. I regret missing the hotel bar … I was just too tired.
The hotel bar “Dampftheo” is in a vaulted cellar that is over 480 years old. So sad to miss it.

The next morning at 7.30am, I received my onward flight confirmation with Emirates Air, departing at 10.20am.

The whole thing was a mess. I didn’t even have time for my free breakfast.

But there is some good news after all. The law was on my side.

Notice of your rights pursuant to EC Regulation 261/2004 – rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long delay of flights.

In general cancelled flight or delayed (more than 4 hours), you can claim up to 600 Euro per person. The delayed and cancelled flight must be the fault of the Airlines.

Passengers will be entitled to the following:
Meals and refreshments in reasonable relation to the waiting time
Hotel accommodation where a stay of one or more nights is necessary
Transfers between hotel and airports

The Flight must be ‘EU regulated’

What documents will you need to file for flight compensation?

Checklist for flight compensation:
1. Where to send the money: Personal and bank account account details (some airline have E-filing compensation system)
2. Flight delayed/cancelled:
– Boarding Pass
– Electronic Ticket Receipt
3. Passport Copy: Matching flight name(s).

I got my compensation 3 weeks after the email to Oman Air.
